SPECIAL
Tuesday was one for the books.
I had the pleasure of taking my older two girls to their annual cleaning at the dentist. During check in, I referred to teeth as pearly whites.

Mortified.

My twelve year old couldn't believe it. The side eye that came----visible for miles.
Parenting is, well, um special.

Post dental appointment, we started, what I hope will be, a new holiday tradition at our house. The Kick Off to Christmas Party.
Nate and I have a desire to shift this holiday season. It's not that my girls aren't grateful... it's more that we live in a society overflowing with stuff--- and that heart of contentment.... well, I'm still struggling at age 40.
So, this Christmas, instead of doing gifts like normal-- the 6 of us are doing a secret santa.

The goal: Intentionality behind the gifts. My hope is that rather than racking up wish lists a mile long, the girls find joy within the gift giving process.
Considering the age of my bunch-- i've enlisted four dear family friends to help execute this plan. They've each been paired with a grenier girl to help them shop and fulfill this "rules list" of our new family secret santa.

While going over the rules Tuesday night at our party--- I explained the gift must be thoughtful. Andrew-- aka long beard-- suggested we add the word KIND to our guidelines.
Immediately and in unison-- all four girls sighed. You know the sigh-- the one of disbelief. How dare I require KINDNESS--- I mean, one could gift a thoughtful pair of socks to their sister because their feet stink. It was an epic moment.
After drawing names and setting ground rules with our friends we competed in a Gingerbread house contest.

It was far more fun than I anticipated. The joy. The hidden talent. I watched and gratitude filled my soul.
While I know this secret santa probably won't go as I "envision," the kick off was the perfect start. Simple. Intentional. Special.

It doesn't take much friends. To choose to be grateful.
Might I encourage you this Friday?

Choose Contentment.
It starts with a shift in perspective. It's worth it.
